Are drowsy drivers a threat to highway safety? How can I tell that I am drowsy?
Yes, drowsy drivers are a major threat to highway safety. The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) thinks so too. Because there are more drowsy drivers on the road, there are now more accidents. When people think of drowsy drivers, they think that they just didn’t have enough sleep.
What they don’t realize is how important this really is. They fail to pay attention on the road because they are didn’t get enough sleep, therefore, putting other people, including themselves, in danger. As a matter of fact, people even fall asleep at the wheel because of their drowsiness.
Contrary to what most people think, but most drivers don’t know when they are drowsy. Most of them think that a cup of coffee should do the trick and get them back on track. This isn’t necessarily so. If you haven’t been getting enough sleep, you’re already at risk. How can you tell when you’re sleepy? If you have any of these signs, you should pull over and rest.
- You yawn constantly
- You have trouble keeping your head up
- You keep jerking the car back into the lane
- You drifted off the road and almost crashed
- You have disconnected, wandering thoughts
- Your eyes keep closing and go out of focus by themselves
- You don’t remember the last few driven miles
- You miss traffic signs, tailgate and drift between lanes
- You feel like you need more than one coffee
- You fee like your eyes are burning from drowsiness
- You don’t react to things well
- You missed a stoplight
