Is it dangerous to be eating while driving?
It is dangerous to be doing anything while driving except for keeping your hands on the wheel and paying attention to the road. Talking on your cell phone, eating or drinking is completely unacceptable. In fact, according to recent surveys by insurance companies and evaluations from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), eating while you drive is one of the most distracting things that you can possibly do. “Distraction was most likely to be involved in rear-end collisions in which the lead vehicle was stopped and in single-vehicle crashes”, according to the NHTSA.
Hagerty President Mckeel Hagerty claims, “It really seems it’s more the spill than the eating. Anything that drips is probably not a good idea.”
Do you not have time in the morning to drink some coffee? Do you drink it on the go, while driving? If so, you’re in danger. Hagerty claims, “I’ve certainly spilled my share of coffee while I’ driving, and it’s not when I’m trying to drink, it’s when I hit bumps in the road.” Stains on your clothes are the least that can happen when you are distracted with hot beverages in your hand.
The top 10 food offenders in a car are:
Coffee – It spills very frequently
Hot Soup – This has the same risks as coffee, but is usually used less
Tacos – Hagerty claims, “A food that can disassemble itself without much help, leaving your car looking like a salad bar.”
Chili – Hot and messy
Hamburgers – The favorite to-go food of many people. A hamburger is quite large and is usually slippery because of the grease
Barbecued food – Simply too messy to eat on the road; sloppy and messy
Fried Chicken – By making the steering wheel greasy, this has a risk of no control of the road
Cream-filled or jelly donuts: Although usually a blessing to the sweet tooth, it is gooey, especially when filled with cream of jelly. The filling usually oozes out from the center, and not everyone drives with a sink in their car. Napkins still leave your hands sticky.
Soft drinks: They might spill and because they are carbonated, they might fizz out during sudden movements on the road
Chocolate: As it melts against the warmth of your skin, chocolate usually leaves stains because of the fact that it melts.
