Is it for old people to drive cars?
Unfortunately, there are more and more old people who make car accidents every time. The elderly were more involved in fatal crashes than young drivers. But young people who are sick with a mild Alzheimer’s disease make more accidents because of their neurological problems than older people. It is certain that driving requires a good memory and high attention on the road and unfortunately, older drivers lack that.
Because the bones are quite fragile of older people, they get injured easier that the younger ones. That’s why during crash, the fatality rate is higher for older people. Young teenagers get fatal crashes because they get distracted easily or simply because they raise their speed limit. Older drivers many times lose orientation where they should go.
Older people still continue to get their drivers’ licenses because they like to be independent. The states do not revoke drivers’ license from them to provide older people more freedom. But fatal accidents keep coming, nevertheless, killing not one but several pedestrians. Those cases happen with drivers who are older than 60 years of age.
If an older driver has any medical problems, he may have driving restrictions for a limited time. Before giving a license, the DMV requires the vision test to pass for everyone and older people are also included because most of them have strong vision problems. After getting their prescribed glasses, older people, this way, lower their driving form crash risk.
Many old people have dangerous medical conditions. Because of that, they could become even more inattentive while driving. That’s why it was recently determined that doctors of old drivers should report diagnosis such as Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, strokes, and certain taken medications. The American Medical Association created an Internet page for doctors so they could observe whether their patient is capable or incapable to drive a car.
According to research study, many fatal crashes so far has occurred because of drivers who are 70 or over. There are many drivers on the road who are over 70 years old and by state law, they are permitted to drive. For a drivers’ license renewal, people regardless of any age are required to take vision tests by state of law.
There are about 15 states that require frequent testing for older people at license renewal. Because older people are aware of their medical conditions, they try to limit themselves from their driving. There are many older drivers who quit their driving after they find out that they have a low ability to drive safely a car. Instead they ask their children or hire other drivers to pick them up in case any need occurs.
Older people use programs such as voucher and ride-sharing programs instead of public transportation. They can get easily drowsy during their driving because of their prescribed medications from insomnia and other anxieties.
