Insure Your Belongings With A Will

People usually consider themselves too young to have a will, and the first thing that comes to people’s minds when they hear this word, is death. Actually, making a will for your belongings will protect your things, and even your family. A will is technically like insurance for everything you find valuable to keep, like a house, a car, or any other precious possession. Getting one as soon as possible is a god decision.

Technically, anyone over 18 years of age, and already has assets, children or a spouse, needs a will. Jonathan Rikoon, a partner in the Trusts and Estates Practice Group at Debevoise & Plimpton in NYC, especially recommends for people to get wills. Think about what you have. Even if you don’t have kids, you have things that are valuable to you. So if you’re afraid that your brother is going to take your baseball card collection when you die but you really want your nephew to have it, get your wishes in a will.

First, you need to determine what you want to give out and how you want to do it.

• Start with your kids. Who’s going to take care of them if both parents die?
• Go through your assets. Your house, investment accounts, and jewelry are all pretty obvious.
• Pick an executor for your will. The executor will read the document and make sure your wishes are granted after your death.
• You’ll need a trustee; he’ll be watching your money, until your kids can get their hands on them. (Executor and trustee can be the same person).

Put your will in a safe place, and let a trustworthy person where to find it. Technically, you don’t need an attorney to make an official will, but it would be best to ensure the will’s authenticity by getting an attorney – even though that isn’t very cheap. This might cost you from $200 to $2000. This may be a pretty depressing thing to concentrate on, when you barely turned 18, got married, or had kids. Whenever depression comes along, encourage yourself that this is only for the best – it is.
