Is it fair that life insurance companies are charging smokers more than non-smokers?
Both life insurance companies and their consumers are certainly aware about the difference between moderate and heavy smokers and they would prefer to offer lower rates for those who smoke less. Why? It’s simple. Smokers simply have a higher risk of dying.
Nowadays, the market is full of different nicotine substitutes. Life insurance companies highly recommend using these products because it has been proven that substitute products, like for example different sorts of nicotine patches, can prevent a smoker to keep himself from smoking for a certain period of time, and gradually he may quit.
Apparently, life insurance companies do care about the health of their clients by giving all kind of treatments that would help a heavy smoker. A few companies have agreed that different sorts of tobacco are equally harmful. Therefore, it would be up to them to alert their clients who do smoke by charging cigar and cigarette smokers the same rate.
Some insurance companies prefer not to charge cigar and the heaviest-smoking class at equal rate.
And the other insurance companies consider cigar smokers to be nonsmokers by offering them the lower rates reserved for those who don’t smoke cigarettes at all.
Apparently, most life insurance companies charge at different rates for cigar smokers, moderate smokers and heavy smokers. Some companies charge less and some more.
So there are options for a cigar smoker to find the best life insurance rates available.
Constant medical researches are made in order to prove on how bad smoking can affect the well-being of smokers and non-smokers.
Today, majority of our population are aware that there are so many diseases and deaths that have occurred because of the high level of smoking, and everybody knows how addictive that habit.
So shall a life insurance company keep increasing their rates to those even who smoke occasionally? It is fair for them to do so because there is still a certain percentage possibility rate of dying for an occasional smoker.
Fortunately for our society, there are more and more people that come with a reasonable conclusion that it is for their own good for them to quite their smoking for good and therefore to increase their living days on earth.
