One of the biggest benefits of an HMO plan is that you will be able to keep your costs low. In addition to being able to pay a low premium, you will always know what your costs are going to be. This is a huge advantage because you can easily keep track of what you are doing, and plan your health insurance expenses.

But on the downside of things, with an HMO plan you will need to get referrals if you want to see a specialist. So in other words, before you can be treated by a specialist you will have to see your general care physician. He or she will then write a referral for you, and only then can you get treated by a specialist. This can be a huge pain in the neck if you go to the doctor a lot.

Also, perhaps the biggest drawback of an HMO plan is that any health care you receive outside of your HMO network will not be covered. This means that you will be responsible for any medical bills that you incur out of network. Even though you may try to avoid this, in some cases it is simply not possible.

Overall, HMO health insurance plans have both benefits and drawbacks. If you are interested in keeping your costs down an HMO plan may be right for you. Just be prepared to only see doctors that are in your network of providers.
