How do I prepare myself for before and after a flood?

prepare for floodingMany people don't think that this natural disaster will be knocking at their door. The fact is - floods happen any time of the year. You should always be prepared, especially if your area is threatened by flooding. In order to qualify the situation as a flood, two adjacent properties have to be under water, according to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

Here are some helpful tips about evacuation, preparation and cleanup:

  • Do you have flood insurance? Sadly, many homeowner insurance policies don't offer flood insurance. If you feel like you do need it, you might want to purchase this additional coverage. Check with your agent to see if you should purchase flood insurance.
  •  Know the types of flood insurance coverage available: If you think that you do need to purchase flood insurance, know which coverage you are going to have: dwelling (most homes), general property (apartments and business), and residential condominium building association (condominiums).
  • Try to move your possessions to higher ground: Try to transfer valuables to higher grounds (second story, top shelf, etc...). This will be able to save your valuables from water damage.
  • When driving, take the high road: Try to avoid water and streams, so when driving, take the high road in order to avoid the water from being near your car.
  • Go up on the roof: If the water reaches a high level and you weren't able to evacuate safely, try to put some warm clothing on and go on the roof with a portable radio. Wait for help there.
  • Get out of the house: It is dangerous to go back in the house during a flood if you forgot someone. The reason why it is so dangerous is because there might be sudden structural damage and the ceiling might fall.
  • Avoid pests: Do not walk on flowing water because pests like snakes, nails and debris may be on the floor.
  • Try to take a lot of pictures from a safe distance: If the flood is going to damage your home, try to photograph and inventory all the damaged property before you begin to clean up. Try to photograph and document structural damage, too.
  • Report your claim immediately: The sooner you report your claim, the faster your insurance company will be able to help you.
