In today's day and age everybody is looking for a way to save money. Some people have seized on this, and have found that buying cheap health insurance is the way to go. Although this does have its benefits, you should be careful as to what you are doing. If not, you may end up in a situation that is not easy to handle.

A lot of people are buying "limited benefit" health insurance plans that do not offer a high level of coverage. These types of plans are most popular among temporary and hourly workers. They are offered at a low price by the employer, and employees who do not have a lot of money usually jump at the chance to buy this type of policy. And to add to the number of people who want to save money, health insurance companies are also getting involved in this niche of the industry. Companies such as Aetna and Cigna have found that this is one area of the industry that they can make a lot of money due to a relatively small amount of competition.

Nearly 47 million people are uninsured in the United States at this time. For this reason there will always be a debate as to whether or not limited benefit health insurance is better than no coverage at all.

When it comes down to it these limited benefit plans cost members thousands less than the policies that are more comprehensive. And for people who are on a tight budget this seems like an easy way to get the coverage that they need. The big difference is that with a limited benefit plan the policy holder does not get a high level of coverage. For instance, there are money caps on things such as inpatient care, hospital room and board, etc.

The problem is that many people do not understand what limited benefit plans are all about. They think that they are getting coverage that will take care of any problem, when in all actuality nothing could be further from the truth. These plans are meant for minor issues; not major catastrophes that could arise.

Limited benefit plans have their place in today's health insurance market. But with that being said it is important that buyers know what they are getting up front.
