This way they will both know what is going on, and a proper resolution to the problem can be had. In most cases you will be able to work things out with the billing office, and they will in turn send another bill to your health insurance company. They can then work everything out, and you will not have to be involved any further.

Also, if you think that your health insurance provider made a mistake by billing you for something that is covered, ask them to look over the claim again. In many cases they will make mistakes for one reason or the next. Maybe they were looking at a plan you had in the past, or another account. The bottom line is that you should at least ask for clarification. This way if you are under the wrong impression about what coverage you receive, you can keep this in mind for future reference.

Overall, checking your bills will only take you a few minutes. If you do not do this you may end up paying money that is covered by your health insurance. It is better to be safe than sorry. Especially if it means that you can save money, and learn along the way.
