How can I prepare myself for a storm?

storm preparetionMore tornadoes hit in May than any other month of the year, but more people fie from tornadoes in April, according to date gathered by NOAA's Storm Prediction Center. This happens because people aren't prepared early in the tornado season.

Make sure that you prepare yourself for bad weather as soon as you possibly can. You never know when nature can strike, and being prepared and ready is the best way to go. Get things in order and rehearse emergency procedures with your family in order to avoid any unfortunate events.

Among this preparation, you should have an emergency kit. Make sure that you place this kit in a portable container so you can easily grab it when evacuating the house. Here is what the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) recommends keeping in your emergency kit:

  • Essential medications and a first-aid kit
  • Can food with a can opener
  • At least three gallons of water per person (usually more is needed)
  • Sleeping bags, rainwear, and protective clothing is important to have. During winter, you might want to take warm clothing, too.
  • Flashlight, battery-powered radio and extra batteries
  • A certain amount of cash
  • Special items required for members of the family (infants, elderly, etc...)
  • Take all keys with you
  • Instructions for how to turn off water and gas if authorities advise you to do so
  • Take copies of all important documents with you. This includes wills, titles and deeds to property, insurance policies, credit card and bank account information, marriage and birth certificates, inventory of household belongings and others.

The most important step is to discuss where to go during a serious storm. If a tornado warning has been issued or an impending flood, where are you going to go? You should have an answer to this question. Keep in mind that knowing what to do in case of an emergency is the most important thing to have in your emergency kit. When purchasing a home, keep in mind that you might want to purchase additional coverage to your policy.
