Spring is coming Up: Handle the Allergies

handle the allergiesSpring allergies can sometimes ruin your warm days near the beach. If you're like most people, you can't wait until the cold, harsh, winters are through. However, a lot of allergy sufferers don't look forward to spring as much anymore. Your mom comes to visit, you through spring parties, you probably even go shopping for new spring attire, and then your allergy symptoms kick into high gear. You probably know these symptoms:

  1. Runny nose
  2. Itchy, watery eyes
  3. Headaches
  4. Sneezing
  5. Sinus Pressure

Why do they come to me?

One of the most annoying seasonal allergies is hay fever. The culprits and bacterium that cause this allergy are allergens such as grass, pollen and ragweed. Most people also suffer from allergies to dust, certain foods and pets. These kind of allergies aren't affected by seasonal changes.

Does age affect allergies?

Allergies can surface at any age. However, allergies can be developed as you get older. As if wrinkles, crow's feet, and your hair getting grey isn't enough.

Can I get rid of my allergies?

You may want to talk to your doctor about your allergies if you believe that you do have seasonal allergies. Your medical provider will most likely analyze your symptoms and work with you to find the best possible way to relieve your symptoms. Doctors will regularly prescribe decongestants or antihistamines to treat allergies if you do have them. Antihistamines do cause drowsiness, so you should probably ask your doctor to prescribe medication that won't put you to sleep.

Other than simply taking medication, here are some things you can do to prevent your allergies:

Keep out pollen from inside of your house. Close your windows and air conditioning can also prevent pollen. An air purifier will also prevent pollen and clean your air.
Pollen usually soars in the early morning and late evening - you might want to stay home during those times.
Remember that pollen clings to hair and clothing. Try taking more showers and washing your clothes more often
Try not to mow the lawn yourself, and avoid exposure to freshly mowed grass.

Will health insurance pay for treatment?

Most health insurers pay for medical care associated with allergy treatment. Find out and make sure.
