What is SR-22 insurance?
Different states use SR-22 insurance differently, so it is hard to specify an answer to this question. After your driver's license has been suspended or revoked, an SR-22 policy is required for reinstatement. If the policy is canceled, lapses or is terminated then the SR-22 insurance requires the insurance company to notify the department of motor vehicles. Your license will be probably be suspended until the policy is brought current or reinstated, if any of these things happen.
After the end of your suspension or revocation, most states require that you must carry SR-22 insurance for a certain period of time. Not all insurers provide SR-22 insurance, so you will have to do some research in order to purchase an SR-22 policy. An insurance company that specializes in high-risk drivers is likely to provide SR-22 insurance. Before your license will be reinstated, you will have to identify proof of SR-22 insurance to the department of motor vehicles. Some states might have SR-22 forms that can be used to substitute for the actual insurance binder, while other states might require for you to present a copy of your SR-22 binder.
There are some states that use SR-22 in strictly DUI cases; however, this isn't always true. There are some states that require SR-22 insurance in order to prevent license suspension or revocation in certain cases (for example: if you receive several tickets in a short period of time or get into an accident while being uninsured). Contact your insurance agent and ask him if you are required to purchase SR-22 insurance in your state, and if so, how to purchase it. Keep in mind that SR-22 insurance is usually required for reinstatement of your license, so you might want to think about adding it to your policy. |
