I am going to be on spring break soon. Does that mean that I need to purchase travel insurance?

When college students think about leaving for spring break and traveling, they often forget that life has many unexpected bumps and turns which they have to be prepared for with the glorious benefits of insurance. It is highly crucial to have the proper insurance before traveling anywhere.

Because parental worried during spring break is such a common thing nowadays, travel insurance companies are offering specific plans for college travelers, at times, specifically aimed for spring break.

Keep in mind that many travel insurance companies don't have these sorts of programs for college students. However, Travel Guard International has a program called StudentGuard that is aimed at students less than 29 years of age.

This is a great program and probably very appealing to college students, considering the fact that it can cost as little as $29 per trip.

Champion Insurance is providing a similar travel insurance plan for students. It also provides them with inexpensive coverage that will later help them throughout their trip. This plan even has a high-risk activity rider which will cover high risk activities such as bungee jumping. This rider will cost extra.

"People really need to be aware that whatever their insurance is in the U.S., it won't cover them outside the country," claims Roy Milan of Champion. He thinks that travel insurance is a must for students who are traveling out of the country.

Here is what most of these policies cover for students traveling during spring break:

  • Trip cancellation
  • Emergency medical treatment
  • Travel delay
  • Lost baggage
  • Other policy-specific coverage and benefits

Before considering purchasing a policy for your college son or daughter, or if you are a student yourself looking for coverage during spring break, keep in mind that is a necessity to shop around and compare prices and coverage plans.

Without doing so, you might not get the policy that you were hoping for, and in the event of a travel crisis, you might be in a shock. Don't let this happen to you.  Be prepared for wherever it is you or your college son or daughter are going with travel insurance.
