Receiving health insurance through your employer may seem like a good idea, but there are circumstances when buying on your own may be the better option. They are few and far between, but just like anything else that you can buy, you need to consider every option. After all, if you can save money and/or get better coverage buying on your own, why wouldn't you look into doing so?
The first thing that you have to do is consider the details of your group health insurance policy. If you do not have to pay for coverage, it would be silly to purchase a policy on your own. When it comes down to it, anytime that you can get free health insurance in today's day and age you should take advantage. But on the other side of things, there are many companies that offer group health insurance but make the employee pay part of the premium. If this is the case, you need to get a solid idea of how much you are paying for this coverage.
Now that you know what you are paying to stay on your employer's group health insurance policy, you can compare this against what you could buy on your own. Keep in mind that this is not a good idea if you have a preexisting condition. In this case, you should stay with your group coverage because your past condition will never come into play. But if you have always been in good health, you may want to shop around and receive quotes to determine if you could save any money.
Most people are best off opting for group health insurance coverage if they qualify. But just because this holds true in most cases does not mean that it will for you. Determine if you would be best off staying put, or buying your own policy.
