Removing Some Uninsured Motorists from the Streets

While the exact number of uninsured motorists driving around our nation's highways is probably not known, it is safe to say there are a lot of them.

In an effort to curb this problem, the state of Nevada is the latest state to implement a program which makes it the law for motorists to provide valid proof of automobile coverage at the time of vehicle registration.

A major highlight of the new initiative is to trim the number of uninsured motorists that occupy the roads of Nevada. Motorists will also be required to provide insurance cards at time of renewal, registration reinstatements and license plate changes.

The new requirement became law on Feb. 1, 2010 utilizing the NV LIVE Program (Nevada Liability Insurance Verification Electronically) which permits the Department of Motor vehicles to get insurance information at the time of registration and verify it instantly; starting on March 15, 2010, the new program will permit motorists and insurers to access a web page where policy information can be updated online.

While keeping vehicle coverage can be difficult for some drivers given the current economic conditions, it is required by law in order to operate an automobile.

The Insurance Commissioner suggests that motorists read the Division of Insurance's "Nevada Consumer's Guide to Auto Insurance Rates," available online at http://doi.nv.gov/consumer.aspx to obtain important information regarding automobile coverage.

While many of us have felt the wrath of these current economic times, getting people off the road in Nevada and any other state who do not have auto insurance is the right thing to do.
