Think Twice before filing a Home Insurance Claim
Isn't the point of having home insurance to file a claim if need be? The short answer to this question is yes. But with that being said, you will not want to think twice before filing a claim. If you jump the gun you may be making a huge mistake. There are times when filing a claim is a good idea, and other times when you should avoid this for one reason or the next.
When you file a claim it means that your home insurance company is going to have to pay for repairs, lost items, or in a liability case. While this may sound like a good deal because you do not have to pay for anything, you will end up getting hit financially in the long run. Once you file a claim with your home insurance company they will begin to see you as more of a risk. In turn, they will raise your premium so that they can stay protected.
If you make too many home insurance claims you may find that your insurer no longer wants to work with you. This can be a huge problem because you never want to go a day without the proper policy in place. If one home insurance company cancels your policy you may find it difficult to find another that is willing to work with you.
Finally, most home insurance policies have a deductible. This is money that you have to pay out of pocket before your insurance kicks in. For smaller claims, you might be better off paying on your own and leaving your insurer out of the picture. This way you can avoid the problems above such as an increased premium, or the chance of your coverage being cancelled.
There are times when filing a home insurance claim is your only option. Just remember, there may be times when handling a situation on your own is better than getting your insurer involved.
