Toyota Car Recall Raises Concerns

One of the most surprising news stories to surface in the past three months concerns the massive automobile recalls issued by Toyota Motor Corporation. These recalls come at the heels of some startling news about the safety and the quality of some of their cars, and the impact these auto defects may have.

The errant portion in particular was the accelerator pedal of several vehicle models would stick. This glitch was first seen as the accelerator having issues with the car's floor mat, but later identified with the construction of the pedal assembly itself.

Commonly, lifting one's foot off an accelerator pedal means that the pedal will spring back. With the cars being recalled, if the driver's foot is off the accelerator, it would not rise back as quickly, and it was implied the car would experience notable difficulty in slowing down. Naturally, many driver's became concerned for their personal and family safety.

Even more damning, shortly after the massive accelerator pedal recall was put out, news also broke out regarding concerns with the Toyota Prius, the company's popular hybrid car. In this case, the Prius was observed as having problems with the software that helps control its braking system.

The recalls have left Toyota, already reeling from the recent storm that hit the global economy, in a precarious position. Despite their lofty spot as the world's most respected and widely admired automaker, the reputation of their products has been seriously damaged. It did not help that the Prius is being questioned for quality, right as a global trend towards hybrid automobiles and environmentally friendly vehicles is beginning to emerge worldwide.

It has also raised consumer wariness toward their products. After the recall of over eight million cars worldwide, there are fears that current holders of Toyota cars will find their vehicles no longer viable for the used car market. These worries extend to the automobile insurance industry - new Toyota owners may suddenly find their premiums winding up a bit higher than those for competing brands with clean noses, so to speak.

While it is largely accepted that recalls are part of the auto business, and that it shouldn't hamper the capacity to claim insurance, it is as yet unclear whether or not the Toyota recall will have a direct effect on one's auto insurance premiums. At present, taking advantage of affordable, low prices for insurance may still be a good idea.
