1. You have other options. Your car insurance agent will want you to think that they are the best, and that you cannot get coverage from anywhere else. But you should know better than to believe this. There are plenty of car insurance companies to choose from.
2. Every car insurance company has a large list of discounts that they can offer. Your car insurance agent may give you some of these, but could keep others quiet as a way to increase the amount of your premium. Make sure that you are always aware of every discount that you qualify for.
3. You do not really need to work with a dedicated car insurance agent. More and more companies are doing away with agents, and in turn relying on a central location. Of course, agents do not want you to know this because it may effect your decision to do business with them.
