When your Company Says No More to Group Health Insurance

Are you currently receiving health insurance benefits through your employer? This is one of the most common ways to receive insurance for yourself, and in many cases your spouse and/or children. With that being said, the fact of the matter is that many companies are no longer able to afford to offer this benefit. What are they doing instead? Simply put, they are getting rid of their group health insurance plan and telling employees that they are on their own. While this may sound cruel, group health insurance is not a benefit that must be legally offered.

Being put in this situation can make for a tough time. Not only are you going to be out of a health insurance policy, but you are also going to have to make changes to your financial life as well. After all, your company is no longer paying for benefits so you will have to do so on your own. Unfortunately, buying an individual health insurance policy can cost up to several hundred dollars per month. For many, this is enough to break the bank and leave them without any extra money.

Should I change jobs if my current employer gets rid of group health insurance coverage? This is a tough question to answer, and every employee is in a unique situation. If you see no other option, this may not be a bad idea. Just make sure that the company you choose to join offers health insurance coverage. And remember, there is no saying that your new employer will not cut back on this benefit at some time in the future.

If your company decides that they no longer want to pay for your health insurance, it is time to make a few major changes. This will force you to branch out on your own, and in turn pay for your own coverage. Although this is not always a bad thing, it is a change that most do not want to make.
