Stolen Vehicle Can Drive You to Insurance Headaches

Having your automobile or truck stolen can be quite a traumatizing experience.

Not only does one feel violated, but the financial headaches can be just arising when you have to file a claim for the stolen vehicle.

For many people, it is not uncommon to park somewhere, forgot where they parked, and emerge later in a panic to find their vehicle not where they thought it originally was. That feeling is made 10 times more frightening when you realize actually that the vehicle was in fact stolen.

If you’re faced with the unfortunate circumstances of having your vehicle stolen, the first thing to do is make sure your auto insurance plan is in place. And you ask what that involves?

First, in order to be covered for this loss, you are required to carry comprehensive coverage on your auto insurance policy. Comprehensive coverage will pay for any damages to your vehicle that is the result of something other than a collision.

Having comprehensive insurance coverage for your vehicle will cover you for losses that are a result of: Theft, floods, flying objects (like rocks), falling trees and more.

Along with carrying comprehensive coverage, keep in mind that a large number of policies do not provide coverage in the event the driver does not take reasonable care to secure the car or truck.

In the event you loan your vehicle to another individual who fails to return it, there is a chance you will not be covered for that loss. It is not out of the question that an insurer could turn your claim down in the event you do not report the theft immediately to law enforcement.

Consumers can also protect themselves and their wallets by lessening the chances of being a theft victim in the first place when it comes to their vehicles.

Among the tips to avoid thefts will be: Locking your doors and having the keys with you at all times; not leaving an additional key anywhere inside of or around your vehicle; parking in secure areas; not leaving valuable papers and/or money visible in the car which could attract thieves.

If the unfortunate does occur, be sure to report the theft immediately and file a report. It is important to take note of the police report number. Be sure to call your insurer’s claims department immediately after speaking with the police.

One of the most agonizing parts will be having to wait for the vehicle to be discovered. It is not uncommon for a vehicle to have to go unrecovered for a month before the insurer finalizes the claim. In the event the vehicle is found in that time period, the insurer then determines whether it will repair or total the vehicle in the event it is damaged.

In the event there are any questionable circumstances involving your claim, your insurer may conduct a detailed investigation.
