Q: Why is California so bad at insuring women?

Even though California is considered a state very well aware of the women’s health, it still received a very low grade, a "D" for their health insurance access for women. This might seem surprising to many because of California’s reputation of health awareness. Here are the most uninsured groups of women in California:

  • Women from the ages of 19 to 24 – 37% uninsured
  • Women from the ages of 55 to 64 – many lost health insurance because of retirement
  • Latinas – 35% uninsured
  • Asians/Pacific Islanders – 28% uninsured
  • Women of Black race – 25% uninsured
  • Immigrant women – 47% of Latina immigrants and 37% of Asian immigrants are under-insured
  • Lesbians – lack of spousal benefits for unmarried couples

However, not all states are on the same path as California. There are states out there that received the highest ranks both in the United States and internationally. Here are the top 8 states:

  • Hawaii
  • Washington
  • Utah
  • Alaska
  • Oregon
  • Arizona
  • California
  • Nevada

Pay attention to the fact that California is number 7 on this list. That must mean that the ratings aren't high at all. The United States isn’t doing so well with insuring women.
